KAILUA COMMUNITY INFO AND HOMES FOR SALE
Kailua is located 12 miles northeast of Honolulu, occupying about 10 square miles on the eastern coast of Oahu, with a population of 38,000. Take the Pali Highway from Honolulu to its end and you will find yourself in this laid-back, tight-knit, compact town with quaint shops and fabulous restaurants offering all ethnic food choices imaginable.. It is known for its comfortable temperatures, cooling trade winds, award-winning beaches, and lush greenery everywhere. The towns of Kaneohe and Waimanalo are its neighbors.
The history of Kailua is surrounded by folklore and legend. However, history buffs believe that the first inhabitants lived and worked the Kawainui Marsh and surrounding land some 1,500 years earlier. Real estate in Kailua was once home to King Kakuhihewa and other Ali’i who were attracted to the agricultural possibilities and beauty of the area. The oral-written lore and legend surrounding Kailua homes can be explored year-round within the archives of the Hawaii State Library system. Kailua means “two seas” because of the two lagoons in the area.
